WORLD ENGLISHES AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS FOR UNIVERSITY EDUCATION

Over the past few decades, notion of World Englishes has achieved much attention among linguists, language teachers, and other professionals. The present study explores impact these trends have had on university education in field English philology culture, focusing programmes run by Applied Languages Faculty, University Economics Bratislava, Slovakia. Our research was designed to gain insights into students’ perception varieties identify those areas which require more order provide students with most relevant content. sample contained 130 one BA MA programme. based a questionnaire provided us data awareness studied issues. were subsequently processed using combined quantitative qualitative methods. One part statistically analysed regard frequency certain aspects. second attitudes evaluative statements. Results analysis indicated both key tendencies their thought orientation occasional excentric views. outcomes enabled establish several important facts, e.g. relatively insufficient understanding terminology concepts, high existence English, and, simultaneously, low features distinguishing varieties, etc. conclusions point out should be represented extensively our curricula reflect actual current situation language.
